Moving to Spain in 2026: 27 Steps to Take Before You Fly

Most guides on moving to Spain look the same: "choose a visa, gather documents, learn Spanish." Different sources tell you different halves of the story, and almost nobody puts it all together. And there's a whole layer of things nobody warns you about, even though these are exactly what cost people money, nerves, and years.

I've lived in Spain for 10 years and helped more than 1,600 families relocate. So I've put together the most complete relocation checklist there is: 27 steps to take BEFORE you fly. Not after you land. Before, while you're still at home. Save this. It's your roadmap.

Strategy and Money (12+ Months Out)

Step 1. Choose Your Residency Type

This is the foundation. Visa first, everything else after. No legal pathway means there's no point browsing apartments and comparing cities. Non-EU citizens need a residence permit.

What matters in 2026. The Digital Nomad Visa is the favourite: transparent requirements and 3 years straight away when applying from within Spain. Other working options: the startup visa, a standard work permit, the highly qualified professional visa (HQP), and the Non-Lucrative Visa (NLV).

❗️ The Golden Visa through property purchase is closed for good. The student visa via language courses is now consulate-only, without family, and with almost no right to work. As an "entry point for a new life" it no longer works. University degrees still grant full rights.

Step 2. Pick the Visa That Fits Your Life, Not Just the One You Qualify For

Meeting the requirements isn't enough. The visa has to give you the life you actually want: can you work, can your family join, can you later modify your status and reach permanent residency. This gets discussed a lot in English-language communities and far too little elsewhere.

Step 3. Calculate Your Financial Cushion Realistically

The rule is simple: show the visa minimum, then prepare the same amount again for actual living.

Example with the startup visa: the requirements say show around €44,000, but in reality you'll need around €68,000. Money evaporates fast: roughly €8,000 to move into an apartment, another €8,000 to furnish it (Spanish apartments are often rented empty: beds, mattresses, and appliances are on you), plus a year of rent. Budget a full year's cushion so your first year isn't spent in panic mode.

Step 4. Meet a Tax Advisor Before You Move

This step gets skipped constantly, and it's expensive to skip. Before relocating, you need to understand: where and how much you'll pay, what happens to your assets back home, what happens if you sell your house or car. Run a tax simulation: estimate your tax burden across different Spanish regions, because rates differ.

Step 5. Understand the 183-Day Tax Residency Threshold

Spend 183 days or more in Spain in a calendar year and you become a Spanish tax resident, taxed on your worldwide income.

💡 Tip: moving in the second half of the year can push your tax residency to the following year. And close major financial deals (like selling property back home) BEFORE you become a resident. Otherwise you may face capital gains tax in Spain.

Step 6. Look Into the Beckham Law

The Beckham regime: a flat 24% on active income plus exemption from Spanish tax on passive income earned outside Spain. It generally works for employees, not for freelancers or autonomos.

Do the math in advance: at an income of around €48,000 a year, the standard progressive scale is often better than Beckham. The effective tax rate in Spain is usually 20-30%, not the scary 47% from the headlines.

Documents (6+ Months Out): Where People Lose the Most

Step 7. Prepare All Powers of Attorney at Home

This is the pain point every relocated person warns about. Queues at some national consulates in Barcelona reach 500 people, around 200 in Madrid. People fly to other countries just to sign a power of attorney, spending around €600 with travel.

Prepare as many powers of attorney as possible at home: for a relative or spouse, listing every institution they might need to deal with (banks, mobile operators, government offices).

Step 8. Order Criminal Record Certificates and Legalise Them

A criminal record certificate, apostilled where required.

❗️ In some countries and cities the apostille takes a long time: plan for it.

Step 9. Get Sworn Translations Done

Documents need translation, often by a sworn translator (traductor jurado). In Spain this is more expensive and slower: some documents are cheaper to translate at home. Check the exact requirements for your visa type.

Step 10. Study the Exact Document List for Your Visa

A "10-item list" is deceptive: you can gather everything and still get rejected over a detail.

❗️ Digital Nomad Visa requirements tightened in 2026: work experience is scrutinised harder (they want employment and tax records, not just an employer letter), education gets checked, and freelancers must already be registered as self-employed in their home country. Requests for additional documents now happen where they never used to.

Step 11. Prepare a Letter of Intent

Consulates increasingly want to see why you're coming, what your plans are, and how you'll integrate. This used to be a nice bonus. Now it's practically a requirement, especially for the Non-Lucrative Visa.

Step 12. Collect and Digitise Your Medical Records

Get physical or electronic copies from your doctors: medical history, test results, especially if you have chronic conditions or see a specialist. In Spain, walking in with these records makes starting with a new doctor much easier than starting from zero.

Step 13. Close All Medical Loose Ends at Home

See all your doctors and the dentist BEFORE the move, with time to spare for follow-up visits. Settle any outstanding clinic bills. The last thing you want in a new country is treating something you could have handled at home.

Entry, Housing, Logistics (3 Months Out)

Step 14. Get Your Schengen or Entry Visa to Match Your Application Route

The Digital Nomad Visa and startup visa can be filed from within Spain: get a tourist Schengen visa, enter, apply. Book your Schengen appointment early: the queue runs 1-2 months. (US, UK, and Canadian citizens enter visa-free for 90 days, which covers the application window.)

Step 15. Book Flights With Flexibility

Book early for better prices, but choose changeable or refundable fares. Paperwork gets delayed all the time, and departure dates have to move.

Step 16. Choose Your Dates Wisely: Seasons and Dead Periods

Summer and early autumn: pricier housing and slower bureaucracy.

❗️ All of August and from mid-December to January 7, Spain effectively shuts down: paperwork freezes. Don't move right before these periods.

Step 17. Book Short-Term Housing for Your First Weeks

Never rent or buy sight unseen. Airbnb or Booking for 3-4 weeks while you search for something permanent on the ground.

💡 Money-saving tip: subletting. People sublet their long-term apartments when they travel. Look in Facebook and Telegram groups. It's cheaper than nightly rates.

Step 18. Research Neighbourhoods in Advance: The Street Makes the Experience

A bad neighbourhood can kill your love for a whole city. In Barcelona, the best areas for living (not tourism) are Eixample, Gracia, Poblenou, Sant Marti, and Sant Gervasi. The touristy Raval, Gotic, and Born: atmospheric for a day, but narrow, dark, sometimes without proper rubbish collection. Hard for daily life.

Check what's nearby: hospitals, schools, high-speed rail, the airport.

Step 19. Plan Your Belongings Early

Decide: sell, ship, store, or suitcases only. This takes longer and hits harder emotionally than you expect, especially sentimental items and the car. Advice from people who've done it: don't bring much. You'll buy plenty locally anyway.

Step 20. Sort Out Your Pets Well in Advance

Microchip, vaccinations (rabies is mandatory), pet passport and certificate, waiting periods: it's a whole separate process. Start early, not at the last minute.

Step 21. Handle Schooling for Your Children

School enrolment, children's medical documents. And separately: prepare your children emotionally and linguistically. Parents who've moved say their biggest regret is not starting earlier. Younger kids adapt fast. School-age children have a harder time.

💡 Bonus: the scouting trip. Come for up to 90 days visa-free, but not as a holiday: as reconnaissance. Rent an apartment where you think you'll live and stress-test your assumptions about the city and neighbourhood.

Money, Connectivity, the Digital Move (1 Month Out)

Step 22. Plan How You'll Move Money Into Euros

Not through your regular home bank: bad exchange rates, high fees. Wise works for smaller amounts. For larger sums (an apartment, a year of living costs): a currency broker with a live account manager. They help with timing the transfer and with proof of source of funds for amounts over €10,000.

❗️ Watch the exchange rate: converting USD to EUR at the wrong moment can cost you up to 15%. Sell assets at home when the rate is in your favour.

Step 23. Set Up Your Euro Wallet in Advance

Revolut (now a Spanish bank, issues a Spanish IBAN) and Wise: so you can pay and split bills from day one, before you have a Spanish bank account. A traditional Spanish account usually opens once you have your residency card in hand.

Step 24. Sort Out Your Phone

Check that your phone is unlocked: otherwise you can't install an eSIM. On arrival: a Spanish SIM or eSIM (Orange, Vodafone), with calls via WhatsApp at first. If your phone is locked: a cheap second handset for the local SIM is a workaround.

Step 25. Handle Mail, Subscriptions, and Your Digital Footprint

Redirect your postal address to a relative
Cancel subscriptions that don't work abroad
Set up and learn a VPN in advance: access to home banking and accounts
Photograph all important documents (bank, tax): a backup before you cross the border

Mindset, Language, Expectations (All the Time You Have)

Step 26. Start Learning Spanish Now, With a System

Not "I'll pick it up as I go": that's the number one mistake everyone makes. You need a structured plan from a tutor. Duolingo and films are supplements, not the plan. Even A1-A2 makes a massive difference in real life: the doctor, town hall registration, the bank, the estate agent. In Catalonia: learn a few basics of Catalan too.

❗️ Without the language, your experience of Spain shrinks dramatically: friendships, bureaucracy, even the humour.

Step 27. Set Your Expectations and Build Psychological Support

Immigration is genuinely hard, even if you're used to moving. It's a new reality, and adaptation takes time.

Set ONE realistic goal for your first year (the language, friendships, launching a business), not ten
If you sense it will be emotionally hard: find a therapist in advance, build the relationship before you move
Bring your own stress toolkit: sport, hobbies, routines

And remember: moving doesn't remove the problems that are already in your head. Be kind to yourself.
