Pareja de hecho — a civil union or confirmed cohabitation of two partners on Spanish territory. The biggest difference between Pareja de Hecho and an official marriage (Matrimonio) is the number of rights and responsibilities for both parties. For example, Pareja de Hecho does not include compensation in case of divorce, is not suitable for inheritance claims, nor for filing joint tax returns.
In all other aspects, Pareja de Hecho is suitable for obtaining Spanish residency. The procedure is available for both Spanish citizens and residents, as well as non-residents of Spain.

After 1 year of marriage to a Spanish citizen, a partner can apply for Spanish citizenship, provided that they have legally resided in Spain during that year.

Depending on the municipality and the partners' citizenship, a minimum time from the date of cohabitation registration is required. Sometimes, a current joint registration may be sufficient.
